Trust Melody was an ambitious new installation made up of audio, textiles, sculpture and moving image works. This new body of work, commissioned by Humber Street Gallery, continued Holmes’ interdisciplinary research practice into the lineage of music and sound. It was a way of relating through knowing and understanding one’s place in the world, with an interest in the ways stories of the past – fictional, archival, historical and poetic – help us to make sense of the present.
At the centre of Trust Melody was a multichannel sound-installation made up of a series of edited, layered and sampled sounds from various musical recordings, performances, vocals and field recordings. It reflected on the influence and social contexts of Rocksteady, Doo Wop and music that emerged from Jamaica during the mid-1960s, considered the legacies of the Blues, and drew connections to Grime in Britain in the early-mid 2000s.
