’This project is based on Pinguicula cyclosecta, native to Nuevo León in Mexico. Following the theories within futurism and themes that explore ecology, plant science and technology, Caleb Lindley and Ashley Holmes have created a sci-fi botanical environment by design and sound of an atmospheric terrarium globe that contains Cyclosectas consuming insects. This commission explores controlled-environment horticulture for ornamental plants.
Caleb Lindley is a multi-disciplinary artist working heavily with 3d modelling and 2d conceptual art, specialising in blending the bizarre and monstrous with the otherworldly and dystopian, taking great influence from old school horror, sci-fi and animation. Lindley’s approach to the commission was to create a design of a terrarium globe that focus on the relationship between plants and insects.
Ashley Holmes created an experimental sound piece that explores the eco-system of plants, insects and surfaces suspended in time behind the terrarium glass. The audio is composed from a series of abstracted field recordings that Holmes has been collecting, in amongst layers of synth sounds and distorted percussion taken from the 'War Island' sample library, made by Spitfire Audio in collaboration with producer and composer Gaika.’
